Cybersecurity

I believe that this is a topic which needs to be addressed in our schools today. Teachers must receive professional development on this issue in order to instruct the children regarding their safety while using the internet. I agree with many of the points stated in the paper which we read on cybersecurity and ethics. Those which struck the loudest chord with me were:
--that we do, indeed, need a means to create a secure community
--that this topic requires additional national exposure
--that parents must be aware and help teach their children about these issues
--that children must protect their personal identities
--that children must engage in cyber ethics and interact appropriately when online

I think that if we all share this information with our school communities, then we will have touched and hopefully made an impact on a great number of lives. It's time to reach out.

Hi Beatrice-

I just finished posting my phishing post as well, so the topic is fresh in my mind. Do you think that it's more the responsibility of the teachers or the librarian to teach about cybersecurity? Are you a librarian or a teacher? Have you discussed this issue with any students yet?

I liked your point about the parents needing to educate kids as well. Kids probably spend more time online at home compared to in school. So, it should be addressed at home as well. This would mean more parent workshops on this topic.

Greetings Beatrice and Kate - - I think the responsibility to spread the word about cybersecurity falls squarely on the shoulders of every adult who is aware. Now that we are, whether we are teachers or librarians, it really doesn't matter. If we use computers with our students, then I think it is incumbent upon us to provide as much information as we can (tailored for the audience, kindergarten kiddos get one version, sixth graders another, etc.). I wonder what the Board of Education's policy is on Cybersecurity -- except filters, I do not recall any information surfacing out of Tweed. Have you?
