Social Bookmarking

As I read about the various social bookmarking sites, my first impression was that there really seems to be some sort of connection for individuals to reach out to others with the same interests. When I explored the sites I spent an awful lot of time doing so and wondered how much time do people actually spend on their computers. Mine feels like an extra appendage lately. I think the sites are useful, but because I am a novice with all of this, I have only used the "regular" bookmarking to save certain sites on my own laptop or for the children at school. I see there is a lot to learn, share, and utilize on these sites.

Hi Beatrice-

Good point. My guess is that it's very easy to get caught up in all of these social bookmarking sites. Though it's a great way to connect with people and share similar interests.

I think that the best way to really see the worth in such sites is to experience it firsthand. I mentioned on my blog that I'm going to sign up with del.icio.us to really organize my countless bookmarks. The same may benefit your students as well if you tagged and made available all of your bookmarks that your students would be interested in. It would be easier than making sure that all computers had the same bookmarks, etc.

Let us know how you make out if you try it!

Hi Beatrice,

I feel the same way about my computer. I spend so much time on it these days that I don't get to interact with the outside world! I think everyone's focus on being social online has taken people away from actually being social in person.
That being said, I am using del.icio.us and I like it a lot. I was so confused before with bookmarks all over the place. I haven't moved all of my old bookmarks over yet though. Right now, I'm just adding as I go. Also, I haven't really taken advantage of the social nature of del.icio.us yet, such as search tag clouds. Maybe that's something I'll explore over the summer.
