Digital Literacy

I think that there are a wealth of online resources for educators out there on the web. For me, it's just a matter of finding the precise ones that you need at the time. I'm always happy to see suggestions from professors and colleagues about great sites because then I copy the URLs into a log book that I have under a certain category and I have it there when I'm looking for something. (I know I should bookmark it, but I still do things the old-fashioned way-but I am getting better!) I hope that libraries don't completely forget about books because I just LOVE books-they are one of life's treasures! I do use the ICDL in my library becuase it is a valuable, free resource and really helps out getting materials for populations that I have nothing else available for them.

Do you guys like the ICDL?

Hi Beatrice-

Thus far, this degree has given us so much exposure to different types of technology. I suppose that this somewhat exceeds my expectations - at least in that area. It's overwhelming at times because I have so many ideas that I could really benefit from having some internal brain categorization- because at the moment, I'm lacking in that department!

I haven't used ICDL yet, as I'm not currently in the library. I'll be curious to hear comments from our fellow bloggers. I'm interested in knowing how others use it as well.

One of the great benefits that I see to everything that we're learning is that I can either use it with or try it out on my own kids! It's amazing to see how much they already know-I'm glad I'm catching up to them in this world of Digital Literacy!

I just read the articles and checked out the site. I had not previously used ICDL in my library, but I have used other ebooks. Unfortunately, the ebooks that I have posted on our school website are copyright protected, so you have to be logged in to view them. I am working, however, on getting student accounts so that the kids can access them and also post on internal discussion boards and use e-mail kind of like we do in WebCT. I definitely liked the ICDL site however, and plan to share this resource with my teachers, parents and students. What's especially wonderful about it is that they can be accessed by anyone, from any computer with Internet access in multiple languages. Fantastic!
